Paprec will design and build the new waste-to-energy plant for Nantes Métropole

Nantes Métropole has chosen Paprec Engineering for the design and construction of its new waste-to-energy plant, one of the largest units to be built in France, with a capacity of 270,000 tons per year.

A plant above European standards

Philippe Cattieuw, the director of Paprec Engineering, explains this unique situation: "For the renewal project of the Nantes plant, we seized the opportunity to design a facility with the highest level of technology. This will be the largest recovery unit built in France in the past 10 years. It is a technological showcase that demonstrates the competitiveness of Paprec Engineering in this exceptional project. The environmental performance and energy efficiency achieved are well above the current market standards, which are necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of such a facility. The value of this construction contract for Paprec Engineering is nearly 300 million euros."

Innovations by Paprec Engineering for the benefit of the residents of Nantes Métropole

The design will incorporate innovations by Paprec Engineering to create a high-performance plant with two 45 MW lines, equipped with Martin Vario Grates, boilers, and a proprietary heat pump system developed by Paprec Engineering, enabling the export of 52 MW to the urban district heating network.

Furthermore, "the flue gas treatment will benefit from a double filtration system, allowing the plant to remain well below the stringent regulatory thresholds for this industry. The plant will be well ahead of European regulations," emphasizes Philippe Cattieuw.

Particular attention will be given to the architecture, with the involvement of a French heritage architect to ensure the integration of the plant into its ecosystem.

The construction work is scheduled to start in 2026, with the energy recovery operation expected to begin in 2029. Service continuity will be ensured during the construction period. "I am pleased to see that French expertise can succeed, especially after the disappointment in Toulouse, which chose Chinese technologies for its plant renovation. I thank the Nantes Metropole for its commitment to French reindustrialization," says Sébastien Petithuguenin, President of Paprec Energies and Paprec Engineering.
